Welcome to our Holland Pecan Farm Journal! We're excited to give you a behind-the-scenes look at life on our family farm throughout the year. From caring for our trees to harvesting fresh pecans, we'll share what goes into producing the quality pecans you've come to know and love. Along the way, we'll also feature delicious pecan recipes, seasonal updates, and a few stories from the farm.

Winter on the Farm

Winter is a busy season, even though our pecan trees are dormant. During these months, we spend our time pruning trees to encourage healthy growth and replacing any trees that have been damaged or are no longer producing well.

One question we're often asked is whether freezing temperatures hurt pecan trees. The good news is that because the trees are dormant during the winter months, they are not harmed by normal winter freezes.

Spring Brings New Growth

As spring arrives, watering and fertilization become essential for producing a healthy crop. This year, we experienced a severe spring drought, making our irrigation system especially important. Although we've received some welcome rainfall, we're still below our normal annual rainfall totals.

Each tree on our farm is equipped with its own microjet sprinkler, which delivers approximately 40 gallons of water per hour across the tree's root system. This targeted irrigation helps ensure our trees receive the moisture they need, even during dry conditions.

Looking Ahead to Harvest

We're encouraged by the excellent nut set we've seen throughout the orchard and are optimistic about a productive harvest this year.

Throughout the growing season, we carefully monitor our trees for common issues such as webworms and pecan scab. When necessary, we treat the orchard to protect the health of the trees and ensure we continue producing the high-quality pecans you've come to expect from Holland Pecan Farm.
